Momentum Ministry Partners’ Church on the Rise award recognizes churches experiencing healthy, mission-shaped growth. These are churches investing in discipleship, developing leaders, reaching the next generation, and positioning themselves for a faithful future. This year’s recipient, Pataskala Grace Church, reflects that vision through a season marked by renewal, clarity, and forward momentum.

According to Momentum Ministry Partners, Pataskala Grace has demonstrated a sustained passion for the rising generation while laying a strong foundation for discipleship that will shape the church for years to come. The leadership team’s work over the past several years has been especially evident, reshaping the culture of the church and helping families rediscover hope for the future.

Pataskala Grace’s momentum has been years in the making. Following a season of revitalization beginning in 2019, the church has experienced steady growth under Pastor Tim Wilmetti’s leadership. Average attendance grew from 68 to 187 by 2025, and the church welcomed 47 new members and celebrated 42 baptisms during that time. The numbers tell a story of more than growth. They point to renewed spiritual health taking root within the congregation.

That shift has centered on rediscovering the purpose of the Church itself.

“We’ve had to shift our culture back to one focused on making disciples and fulfilling the Great Commission,” Tim shared. “Rather than simply existing as a church, we’ve spent time preaching and teaching on ecclesiology, helping people understand God’s expectations for His Church. When people recognize they have a part to play in God’s purposes, they tend to stick around and help produce fruit.”

As part of that renewed clarity, Pataskala Grace began making intentional staffing and ministry decisions with an eye toward the future. In 2022, the church hired Josh Rollins as Associate Pastor to lead student ministry and help strengthen discipleship across the church, with the clear intention from the beginning that he would one day plant a new congregation.

That long-range vision shaped how the church approached next-generation ministry. Rather than treating students as a siloed program, Pataskala Grace invested in building a robust and integrated pathway for children and students. The church offers weekly Wednesday night programming for kids and students, alongside Sunday morning children’s ministry and a dedicated student Bible study. These environments create multiple touchpoints for formation, community, and service.

“We’ve seen students move from simply attending church to owning their church,” Josh said. “Almost all of our students serve in some capacity on Sunday mornings.”

That emphasis on the next generation has strengthened families and reinforced a culture of participation throughout the congregation. Young people are not viewed as the church of tomorrow, but as an essential part of the church today.

As the church continues to grow, Pataskala Grace is taking clear next steps that reflect a posture of movement rather than maintenance. Beginning Easter Sunday 2026, the church will move to two Sunday services, creating space to continue welcoming new people while maintaining healthy ministry rhythms.

“It’s a big step for our church,” Tim said, “but it feels like a necessary step if we’re going to continue to be faithful to God and accommodate the growth He has given us.”

At the same time, Pataskala Grace is preparing to send. In early 2027, the church will launch Newark Grace Church in Newark, Ohio, the first church plant in Pataskala Grace’s more than 50-year history. Josh will transition off staff later this year to pastor that effort, a move that reflects years of prayerful planning rather than a sudden pivot.

“We’re trying to develop a culture where we’ll do whatever it takes to share the Gospel and make disciples,” Tim said. “Whether it’s launching a second service or planting a new church.”

That posture of planning ahead, preparing leaders, and moving outward reflects the broader mission of the Charis Fellowship: to plant churches, train leaders, and do good in the communities God in which has placed them. Pataskala Grace’s journey is a reminder that healthy growth is rarely accidental. It flows from faithfulness, clarity of mission, and a willingness to take courageous next steps.

What began as revitalization has become renewal. And renewal, by God’s grace, is now giving way to multiplication, making Pataskala Grace a fitting recipient of Momentum’s Church on the Rise award.

The post Pataskala Grace Church Received Church on the Rise Award from Momentum Ministry Partners first appeared on Charis Fellowship.

“It’s one thing to plant a church. It’s a different level to multiply leaders who can multiply churches.” Clancy Cruise, pastor at Marysville Grace Church in Marysville, Ohio, said this upon receiving the Ed Jackson Church Multiplication Award. Clancy is the second recipient of this award, presented by Assist Church Expansion at their ministry-sponsored meal at Charis Fellowship Conference.

In the early 1960s Ed Jackson was part of the original group who started Grace Polaris Church, the first Charis Fellowship church in Central Ohio. In the 1990s Grace Polaris planted Grace Powell Church, where Ed went on to serve as a missions pastor. In 2002 Grace Powell Church hired Clancy Cruise to plant a church in Marysville, Ohio. Since then Marysville Grace has planted several churches that have gone on to plant churches, including Bellefontaine Grace in 2016 who recently planted Lake Campus in 2024.

Clancy said, “It’s quite an honor to be recognized for two decades of training and church planting. I’m proud to be part of our Fellowship and I know we have a lot of churches that are committed to multiplying.”

This award seeks to honor Ed Jackson’s legacy. While his impact was significant in Central Ohio, it stretches far beyond one region. He pioneered church planting efforts in Alaska, served at churches in Alaska and Florida, and was involved in global missions. The goal of the award is to recognize individuals who, like Ed, show a strong commitment to church expansion in the Charis Fellowship, and to also inspire an ongoing church expansion culture across our movement of churches.

“The award was a recognition not only of the efforts of our church, but the churches and leaders we’ve planted,” Clancy said. “I’m confident going forward that the churches we planted will also plant. I’m very thankful, humbled, and encouraged by the recognition for our churches and our guys.”

Sunday, May 4, 2025 marked one year of Sunday gatherings for Grace Church Lake Campus in Indian Lake, Ohio. The church celebrated with a special service at Old Field Beach on Indian Lake that included a reflection on the history of the church campus plant, a time of worship, a special honoring of those who worked on a recently-completed work project, a brief message by Lead Pastor Kohltin Hoeppner, and a family potluck.

The church, which is a campus plant of Bellefontaine Grace Church, began meeting two years ago in a home. As attendance grew, the church began hosting monthly services. Last May they launched regular weekly gatherings, held in Indian Lake High School. Jared Gudeman, former pastoral resident at Urbana Grace Church in Urbana, Ohio, serves as the worship pastor at Lake Campus, and Lily Hoeppner serves as the director of Grace Kids.

In the two years since they began meeting, the church has grown from 11 people to 75 regular attenders, and they have celebrated two baptisms. As a campus of Bellefontaine Grace Church, they share the same mission of being light in darkness by learning, living, and giving the Gospel. The church strives to do this by connecting with their community through various events and outreach opportunities. In April they hosted a community egg drop event where 1,200 people attended, despite inclement weather.

A big way the church has connected with their community over the past year was by rebuilding a home that was impacted by a tornado in March 2024. Lake Campus partnered with Charis Disaster Response to help facilitate the project and connect with other Charis Churches. The Augustus family has been part of the campus plant since the beginning, and the church was honored to come alongside them in the rebuilding of their home.

During the service Kohltin read a thank you letter on behalf of the church to those who served the community during the disaster response following the tornado last spring. An excerpt from the letter reads:

Your faithfulness in serving those affected, especially the Augustus family and others in our church and community, is a living testimony to the Gospel. The Augustus family, whose home was damaged in the storm, has been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support. Your acts of kindness—whether through financial assistance, labor, or prayer—have given them hope and strength as they navigate this difficult journey toward rebuilding their lives. Through every hour of labor, every dollar donated, every prayer lifted, and every word of encouragement spoken, you have embodied the very heart of Christ.

In attendance of the celebration service were volunteers from Ashland Grace Church, Marysville Grace Church, and East Side Grace Brethren Church who served on the project. Kohltin also honored several community partners and local businesses who donated supplies.

This summer Lake Campus has plans for a monthly Lake Day where the community is invited for free food and free activities such as a giant slip-n-slide, a family fun day, and a spikeball tournament. A unique service that is a highlight of the summer is their “Church on the Lake” where the worship band sets up their equipment on the boat dock and church attenders gather on boats parked near the dock for the service.

This passage has been a guiding principle for the aptly named Journey Church, a Charis Fellowship church located in eastern Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia. Pastor Adam Johnson, along with his wife Megan and their four kids, have spent the past decade walking alongside their community as they helped shape Journey into the church it is today.

In this Luke 24 passage, two apostles were walking along the road to the village of Emmaus discussing the death and resurrection of Jesus. As they were talking, Jesus appeared next to them, but they didn’t recognize Him. Megan said, “What’s so moving about this passage is that Jesus drew near to them — He walked at their pace, asked them questions, let them express their grief and doubt.” Verse 27 says, “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” Shortly after this, their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus, and they ran to tell others of their encounter with their risen Lord.

Megan said, “We try to follow this example as we reach out to those around us. We have to go to them where they are and walk along with them along the way. And in that process, we pray that their eyes are opened and they recognize Him (Luke 24:31). We beg the Holy Spirit to keep doing that! Then we pray that they run back to tell others about the Jesus that they have discovered (Luke 24:32,33).”

Journey Church desires to help people discover, be discipled in, and deliver the good news of the Gospel to their communities and the rest of the world. They do this not just by inviting people to attend service or hosting big events, but by doing life alongside their neighbors.

“It’s been a long process of tilling the soil,” Adam said. “But it’s been neat to see God — in His timing — produce the fruit.”

The church, which averages about 120 on a Sunday, recently had to knock down a wall to make their sanctuary big enough to accommodate their growing congregation, and soon will need to undergo another expansion. Adam and Megan said, “Most of our growth has come primarily through relationships. By knowing our neighbors, and living life with them, we are able to help them discover Jesus. Everything we do directs people to the Word and seeing Jesus in it. Once people discover Jesus, they invite others to ‘come and see’ the Jesus they met.”

In September Journey held a special baptism service where 13 people were baptized, most of whom put their faith and trust in Christ within the past year. Among those baptized that day was a family of three, who hosted the service in their backyard. Three years ago, before the family was connected to the church, their home was damaged in a tornado. They had friends who attended Journey, and a group of people from the church helped clean up and repair their home and yard. Two years later the wife attended a women’s event, and later a Sunday service. She invited her husband, who agreed to come only to see his friend’s reaction upon seeing him in church. But God drew them in, and they trusted in Him and began to pray for their teenage daughter, who later also found hope in Jesus. All three were baptized in the very backyard that strangers — now family — helped to repair three years prior. Another young girl who was baptized led the congregation in singing “Who You Say I Am,” a song that was meaningful to her in coming to faith in Jesus.

Adam said, “We really got to see how people discovered, were discipled in, and delivered the good news on that day. It was a special day for our church, it felt like a page turn in the best way possible.”

This summer Assist Church Expansion launched the Ed Jackson Church Multiplication Award. The award is named after an influential leader in the Charis Fellowship who had a big impact in the life of many churches around the country.

Ed Jackson served in the US Marine Corp during World War II and with the Ohio State Highway Patrol before entering into ministry. He devoted forty years to church planting and missions work in Alaska, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, and the CAR. Ed also served as Director of Church Planting for Grace Brethren North American Missions for five years (1985–1990).

In the early 1960s Ed was part of the original group who started Grace Polaris Church, the first Charis Fellowship church in Central Ohio. In the 1990s Grace Polaris planted Grace Powell Church, where Ed went on to serve as a missions pastor. Grace Powell planted Encounter Church, who planted Movement Church, who planted Three Creeks Church, who planted Contrast Church. Six generations of Charis churches in Ohio can trace their roots back to the influence of Ed Jackson.

The Ed Jackson Church Multiplication Award seeks to:

Honor Pastor Ed’s legacy of relentless dedication to church planting.

Inspire a church planting/multiplication culture within the Charis Fellowship.

Recognize individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to expanding the Gospel through church multiplication.

Encourage lifelong dedication to church expansion, following Pastor Ed’s example.

The inaugural award was presented to Pastor Mark Artrip at Charis Fellowship Conference on July 10, 2024, at the Assist Church Expansion sponsored meal. Mark, who planted and is the lead pastor of Movement Church, has exemplified the four criteria for the award: A proven track record in successful church expansion initiatives, innovation in reaching new communities with the Gospel, mentorship and development of future church planters, and a life marked by faith, perseverance, and a passion for spreading God’s Word.

“It’s humbling to be mentioned in the same breath as a trailblazer like Pastor Ed Jackson. He was a friend and mentor who set the bar very high for living a life devoted to church planting fueled by prayer. I love telling stories of Ed’s faithfulness and sacrifice for our Fellowship of churches and I’m honored to be recognized and continue his legacy.”

On March 14, 2024, Western Ohio was devastated by an EF3 tornado.

The tornado had a path 1,000 yards wide and winds that reached 155 mph. The areas of Russel’s Point and Indian Lake received heavy damage to homes, trees, businesses, and mobile homes. Three people were killed, 27 were injured, and over 900 people had damage to their dwellings.

Among the families affected, Grace Church Lake Campus, a church plant of Bellefontaine Grace Church, had 5 families whose homes sustained damage. One of these families, the Augustuses, received the most significant damage to their home in Lakeview, in one of the hardest hit areas.

Luke and Nyki Augustus and their four children (Lily 17, Ari 12, Deegan 7, and Phoenix 6) have attended Bellefontaine Grace Church for three and a half years, and are now active members at the new church plant. Grace Church Lake Campus had a soft launch into small groups January of 2023. It began with 11 members and has grown steadily into about 75 people total.

“I have personally ministered to and discipled the Augustus family during their time at Grace, both at our main campus and now our new plant,” said Kohltin Hoeppner, founding and lead pastor at Grace Church Lake Campus. “As a young new church, loving the Augustus family and our community well in this crisis is important to our Christian witness of love and the sharing of the Gospel message.”

The Augustuses face many challenges in rebuilding their home. Both Luke and Nykki are self-employed, two of their children have autism, and the original condition and location of their home proved challenging. Prior to the tornado the house was in need of updates and repairs, and being in a flood zone, the family was unable to secure homeowners insurance.

Currently, the Augustuses have sought help from United Way, Samaritan’s Purse, and God’s Pit Crew. They have also received support and help from Grace Church. Through these national and local ministries, they have received some support but are in need of more in order to see their home restored.

“When praying for the Augustuses and how to address their situation, God has laid it on the heart of our church to see that their family can move back into a healthy and safe home,” Kohltin said. “We have begun the renovation process alongside Luke and his wife. However, this process is a daunting one. We hope by seeking help from the Charis Fellowship that God will supply the right people with the right skills or resources to continue to raise up this family for the glory of God, the furthering of His Gospel truth, and the building of His local church.”

It took a while to meet the requirements of the zoning department to receive the necessary permits, but they have now secured them and are finally ready to move forward.

Todd Derry, who is overseeing the project from the Charis Disaster Response side, said, “We are extremely grateful for the amount of work and effort that Bob Sidwell from East Side Grace (Blacklick, Ohio) has put into drawing the plans, estimating, and developing the project. He has spent countless hours and personal resources to make several trips from his home in Columbus to Lakeview to assess the damage, get measurements, and work with the homeowner to get us to where we are today.”

The overall estimate for the project to restore the home to a livable condition is approximately $55,000, and they are about halfway there. Through Charis Disaster Response, they are praying Charis churches will provide the additional $28,000 to make this home restoration a reality. Some local individuals have also offered some supplies to go toward the project. Every little bit helps!

“In addition to the funds, Charis Fellowship is providing 100% of the labor, which we hope to get in the form of response teams from our churches,” Todd said. “We need roofers, siders, plumbers, electricians, framers, drywallers, mudders, painters, etc. In most cases, experience isn’t necessary, we just need willing people that know how to swing a hammer and operate a paint roller.”

Kohltin said, “Grace church seeks to be light in darkness (John 1:4,5). We believe that the Augustus family can be that light for Jesus in a poor and devastated community in which we seek to see people come to a saving knowledge of Jesus!”

Interested churches or individuals should contact Todd Derry (DisasterResponse@CharisFellowship.com) for more information.

The post Church Plant Partners with Charis Disaster Response first appeared on Charis Fellowship.

How did Movement Church start?
Movement Church started in the fall of 2012. I had been on staff at Grace Church in Powell with Sean Spoelstra, who planted Encounter Church in Dublin, Ohio, in 2008. Sean and the elders of Encounter knew our heart to someday plant a church and the rest is history.

Movement Church first launched services in a dance studio in 2013, and later relocated to the Hilliard YMCA in 2014. We grew to two services, and during the 9 years and 11 months we met at the YMCA we sent out 25% of our adults to plant two other churches in nearby communities. We always knew a building would be a long term need. In 2018 Movement was gifted some land and we began saving seriously after that. We had already planned to do a capital campaign in 2020, and when Covid happened and we were displaced from the YMCA for 14 months, we knew we couldn’t wait any longer.

How do you hope God will use this building in your community?
The goal of this project was to give us a permanent presence in Hilliard. We want to see Jesus take hold of lives and families and this building gives us a home to minister out of. It is perfectly situated across the street from Bradley High School and Memorial Middle school in our growing district, giving us a visibility to families and a platform to do ministry from. Having been portable for so long, we are excited to have consistent room for worship, space to minster to students and kids, and flexibility for events that minister to our community. Things like tailgating parties before football games and our free Christmas store in partnership with families from the school will be easy to accommodate.

How did you get connected with the Charis Fellowship?
I have been involved with the Charis Fellowship since the day I was born. I grew up at Rittman Grace Church in northern Ohio, participating in things like Momentum Youth Conference and Momentum Travel Teams. I attended Grace College and Grace Theological Seminary. I interned at Wooster Grace Church in northern Ohio. I was a student pastor at Grace Powell Church in Central Ohio. I have also worked with Assist Church Expansion.

How did you end up as a church planter?
I went on a Momentum Travel Team when I was 17 and saw different facets of the local church. On that trip I saw multiple portable, startup, and restart churches and for some odd reason was drawn to those things. I had been drawn to pastoral ministry but was in denial that was my calling. I think practically that lane of church ministry fit my personality and heart. I committed that summer to someday plant a church. As I explored that calling over the next years of school and student ministry, I realized I wanted to lead a church that never stopped multiplying. My heart is that Movement Church continues to grow locally as well as exponentially as we have a vision to plant 25 churches. This fall we will send our third church plant (Bright City Church, led by Josh and Sarah Taylor) in Sunbury, Ohio.

MaryAnn reflects on their ministry over the decades, Jason and Crystal discuss how their ministry shifted during the Covid-19 pandemic, and Dave looks to the future of Encompass’s involvement in ministry in the U.K.

Highlights of Ministry in England, by MaryAnn Barlow
During our years in London, we focused on students and young professionals, and eventually refugees.

We did a lot of community outreach in the government housing project where we lived. During these outreaches we met a young lady named Rachel. Rachel was an atheistic activist. Through our collective witness and interactions, eventually Rachel became a believer in Jesus. We have maintained a relationship with her, and we have become godparents for her four children. Rachel is now actively sharing her faith as a believer in Jesus in Biggleswade, England.

We led several Bible discovery small groups. One of the ladies who came a group was Jieun Lee from Korea. She had attended church as a young person but had since lost her way. During group meetings we did a lot of Bible reading. Eventually, Jieun became convicted of her sin and need of a Savior above everything else. We baptized Jieun and she is now an active witness in her community in Bath, England.

We were invited to lead small group Bible studies at Goodenough College. During that time several people became baptized believers. They are now living for Jesus in New Zealand, Australia, Wales, and England!

More recently we have been working in Birmingham. There are two ministries that stand out as being particularly effective culturally. One is Open the Book, a program which allows us to go into the local schools and act out Bible stories. The other is Messy Church. We have seen people come to saving faith in Jesus through these ministries. Holly Hill School has been transformed over the last six years. It is now a place where children from non-Christian families are taught Bible stories and biblical life values, as well as how to pray and worship. It is astonishing to see what God has done.

Perhaps the most significant ministry was David and Becky Schwan’s guitar clubs. Many people learned to find their voice through these clubs. The gentle care and coming alongside of hundreds over the years, showed the musicians that they mattered to God. We would watch people transform from quiet or belligerent to gentle people who could talk about God in a personal way.

Ministry Transitions, by Jason & Crystal Horner
In 2020 some of the ministries in England shifted geared toward medical environments. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a call went out to the local community asking for clergy to serve as chaplains amidst the surging number of patients in the ICU and the stretched medical staff. Jason began volunteering as a chaplain at the area’s largest hospital, which has a staff of more than 11,000.

Jason was assigned a ward to visit each week and saw the Lord work in many hearts as he was able to pray with patients, offer Bibles, and be a listening ear. Throughout the peak of the pandemic, much of the Encompass team also worked closely with the Frankley food bank to deliver thousands of meals per week to people who were isolating or otherwise unable to leave their homes. The team got creative throughout the various lockdowns—from offering a socially-distanced holiday club (Vacation Bible School) to sending Easter activity kits to families.

During this time Crystal also shifted her ministry focus by partnering with a charity that helps vulnerable/isolated women and newborns through their perinatal journeys. Most of the clients are victims of domestic abuse, homelessness, human trafficking, wars that forced them to become refugees, or other crises—and they’re simultaneously preparing to bring a baby into the world. The team of Christian doulas receives client referrals from healthcare and social workers and journeys with the women from pregnancy to the “fourth trimester,” including going to the deliveries to be birth partners for them. The team provides baby and maternity supplies, takes clients to appointments, gives them meals and food bank parcels, offers emotional support, helps with the newborns, and links them into their local communities and churches. We have seen God do amazing things in the lives of these precious women, who had lost most of their agency and security in life, as they bravely enter into parenthood.

Future Vision, by Dave Guiles
Reflecting over the past forty years of ministry in the U.K., I am impressed with the patience, faithfulness, and creativity of the missionaries we’ve deployed there. Our teammates willingly invested their lives in taking the Good News of Jesus back into a country that many years ago was the global powerhouse for missions. They were quick to accept that American methods for outreach and church planting were unlikely to produce results, so they prayed, experimented, and stayed focused until they saw lasting fruit. Similar to the U.S., the current spiritual and cultural soil is changing rapidly. Will you join us in asking God to raise up a new wave of patient, faithful, and creative workers? Thanks to the first generation of missionaries, they’ll have a good foundation to build upon. I trust our most fruitful years are still ahead!

The post Part Two: Mobilization in Europe first appeared on Charis Fellowship.

It’s been four decades since global workers with Encompass World Partners first entered the United Kingdom. Since then, several families have served in England by planting churches, training leaders, and leveraging social clubs for the Gospel. In celebration of this fortieth milestone, a few workers reflected on their time in England.

Part one of this series was written by Tom Barlow and reflects on the history and trajectory of Encompass’s involvement in the U.K. Tom and his wife, MaryAnn, have served many years in England, first in London and later in Birmingham. They recently concluded their time in England and returned to the United States in December 2022.

Encompass entered the United Kingdom in 1982 as part of a focused effort, led by Tom Julien, to see up to 100 staff mobilized to reach the continent of Europe. Since the end of World War II, many evangelical missions felt the strategic importance of reaching the “Old Continent” with the Gospel message, which was difficult to find in the traditional churches — many of which were backed by the state and part of the governmental system.

Within the Charis Fellowship, key initiatives like Training in Missionary Endeavors (co-sponsored by Encompass and Momentum Ministry Partners) and the Euro-Missions Institute, held at the Château de Saint Albain, shared the vision of spiritual need across the continent. God used those and other initiatives to raise the first Encompass staff to enter the U.K., including Phil and Eleanor Steele and Dave and Cindy Kowalke.

Bill and Beckie Kiddoo joined the team in 1986, followed by Greg and Cheryl Shipley and Roy Angle. David and Becky Schwan joined in 1990, followed by Brian and Rhonda Weaver. Beckie remembers “the call” focusing on how many churches were closing in the U.K. per week at that time and how many mosques were opening at an alarming rate.

Early ministry focused on learning the British “spiritual soil” and how to plant and water seed that would bear spiritual fruit. Early on, it was clear that using words like “missionary” or “church” could shut down conversations, rather than opening people up to consider the Gospel. Early workers had to build relationships and work closely with local believers to counter the “structural resistance” to the idea of church, something that was seen by the majority as corrosive and even abusive. Others saw structural resistance to church in the form of apathy or irrelevance. Required religious instruction in school had been a factor in inoculating people against the truth of the Gospel.

Early workers spent time prayerfully considering where to plant early “points of light” to create momentum in planting other churches. Birmingham was chosen with a strategy to see one church planted on each of the four points of the compass in the city: north, south, east, and west.

The Schwans and Kiddoos served faithfully alongside the Shirley Grace Church in southeast Birmingham. Many people were reached for Christ through activities like youth clubs, puppet presentations in school assemblies, speakers’ clubs, and guitar clubs. Bill Kiddoo led “Speaking Aloud” clubs that helped people find their voice to express what was going on inside through speeches and English learning clubs. This created connection points for sharing the Gospel.

In 2002, David and Becky Schwan gathered a team of six — including two British couples — to launch a new effort in the Rubery/Frankley area of southwest Birmingham. A particular focus was a guitar club outreach, capitalizing on David’s guitar ability, to reach out to men in the area and to draw them into Gospel conversations. In late 2004, the Grace Community Church started meeting on Sundays — first in Rubery, and then in Frankley. Many have encountered the Gospel through the ministry of the church family through events like the Frankley Guitar Club, a monthly youth night, Messy Church, Open the Book, and most recently, Craft and Cuppa — a Thursday morning gathering of moms and their kids for a cup of tea, a craft, and conversations around spiritual needs.

As with many churches, Covid was a particularly trying season. Both churches, Shirley and Frankley, had to find new ways to do all the old ministries. Shirley Grace, which was led for over 10 years by local Pastor Malcolm Stevens, moved their meetings online. This was an unexpected bonus and the church actually grew stronger through the Covid isolation.

The Frankley church experienced ups and downs, trying many creative ways to continue meeting and reaching out to the local community with so many needs. Walk and Talk Church and working alongside a local food bank were two of many creative activities attempted. Though the Frankley church has just changed format for regular gathering as a church family, three principal outreach avenues continue: Messy Church, Open the Book, and Craft and Cuppa.

More local leaders are involved in guiding the two churches as Encompass’ role in church planting and development decreases. We praise God for these two local bodies, and ask you to continue praying for local leaders, as well as for the ongoing “behind the scenes” mentoring of local leaders, which continues through current Encompass staff.

Part two of this series will include ministry highlights, transitions, and future plans.

The post Part One: Mobilization in Europe first appeared on Charis Fellowship.
