Tom Julien, retired Charis Fellowship pastor and global worker with Encompass World Partners, died on January 16, 2023. Tom and his wife, Doris, were instrumental in starting the ministry of the Château de Saint Albain in France where they were involved in evangelism, training, and church planting. Visitation is planned for Friday, January 20, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 5:00–7:00 p.m. in Warsaw, Ind., and a celebration of life service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church. See Tom’s full obituary below.

Tom (Thomas T.) Julien of Grace Village Retirement Community in Winona Lake, Ind., went home to be with his Lord on Monday, January 16, 2023, at the age of 91.

Tom was born June 27, 1931, in Arcanum, Ohio. He was the sixth of Russell and Clara Julien’s seven children. Raised in a Christian home, he received Christ as his Savior at an early age, and during his teenage years dedicated his life to the Lord for missionary service. It was at Bob Jones University that he met Doris Briner, whose spiritual experience was identical. They were married August 21, 1953, and the year following moved to Winona Lake, Ind., where Tom studied at Grace Theological Seminary (MDiv 1957; DD 1996). During their years in Winona Lake, they started the Grace Brethren Church in Fort Wayne.

In October 1958 the Juliens left for France, serving under Grace Brethren Foreign Missions (now Encompass World Partners). After language study in Geneva, Switzerland, and initial attempts in evangelism in Grenoble, France, they acquired the Château, a 14th century property in Burgundy, which became a center for encounter and discussion. During the next twenty years, they were involved in the ministry of evangelism, teaching, and church-planting. During this time, the Europe team grew to over 50 missionaries in four countries.

In 1986 the Juliens were asked to return to Winona Lake where Tom became the executive director of the mission. He served for a year as its Moderator. Upon Tom’s retirement in 2000, the Juliens moved to Paris, France, for three years, where they were in a ministry with university students. Since moving back to Winona Lake, Tom became involved in the development of leadership training both for the mission and the Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, where he served on the pastoral staff.

Tom’s wife Doris went to be with the Lord in 2009. Tom is survived by three children, Becky (David) Schwan (Willard, Ohio), Terry Julien (Winona Lake, Ind.), and Jacqueline (Jeff) Schram (Winona Lake, Ind.); five grandchildren, David (Emily Hobert) Schwan (Ellensburg, Wash.), Rachel (Steve) Williams (Houston, Texas), Philip Schwan (Willard, Ohio), Jonathan Schram, engaged to Heather Cummings (Charlotte, N.C.) and Joelle (Brandon) Haun (Columbus, Ohio). He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Gray, Van, Wren, and Warren. He loved his family well and was deeply loved by them. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and four sisters.

Friends and family may visit on Friday, January 20, 2023, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 5:00–7:00 p.m. at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road in Warsaw, Ind. Tom’s life will be celebrated with a service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, 1200 Kings Highway in Winona Lake, Ind., officiated by Pastor Kip Cone and Terry White. Burial will follow with a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw, Ind. Tom’s service will be livestreamed on Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/WLGBC on Saturday.

Encompass World Partners has created the Tom Julien Memorial Fund to honor Tom’s life of ministry. Gifts given to this fund will be used to bless Encompass ministries that Tom was most passionate about. This includes evangelism in France, leadership development in Central Africa, and partnering with the global Charis Alliance. To give by credit card or bank ACH, go to EncompassWorldPartners.org/Julien.

June 17, 1959 – October 25, 2021

Sherie Dianne Howell was born June 17, 1959 to Melvin and Patricia Waters. She was the 2nd of three children, having an older brother Bob and younger sister Tina. As a teenager attending Hagerstown Bible she was born again, and her faith in Jesus became the foundation and center of her life.

Sherie graduated from Heritage Academy High School in Hagerstown in 1977. During her senior year of high school she met the love of her life, Stephen Howell. She fell for him as she heard him preach, and he for her as he heard her sing. Sherie prayed that she would marry a preacher, and her prayers were answered when they married that same year on September 6th in Forestville, Maryland.

The fruit of their union is five children Christina Sherie (’79), Janell Joy (’81), Marc Stephen (’83), Phillip Michael (’85), and Sandy Dianne (’87). Sherie loved being a mother as it was the realization of one of her life’s greatest aspirations. In addition to her work as a mother and homemaker, where she kept a beautiful home, Sherie held positions as a bank teller, receptionist, and courtroom clerk for Prince George’s County Circuit Court.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and crafting; activities which centered on making the spaces and gatherings of which she was a part more beautiful and welcoming. Most notable were the elaborate graduation parties and weddings where she ensured every detail was attended to.

Her heart was to serve others and to show love to all those God brought into her life. As she dealt with great physical pain and emotional suffering, it was His love that sustained and shone through her.

Even in her last months as she battled cancer, she spoke often of the opportunities this gave her to love those around her, and point them to her Savior. In her final hours she expressed excitement that she would soon be meeting Jesus face-to-face, and said she would await the time when we all can celebrate with Him together.

Sherie is preceded in death by her father, mother and her sister. She is survived by her brother Robert Waters, her husband Stephen, and her five children: Christi Felabom (Ryan), Janell Wagner (Joel), Marc Howell (Sarah), Phillip Howell (Christine), Sandy Furtado (Kyle), and her twenty-one grandchildren: Gideon, Andrew, Dominic and Hannah; Benjamin, Alaina, Stephen and William; Annika, Cora, Eden, Sanjana and Bruce Arjunan; Ellyana, Grace, Evangeline, John and Luciana; Josalynn, Janell and Joel.

Pastor Douglas M. Forsythe, 69, is “absent from the body and present with the Lord” (2 Cor. 5:8). He unexpectedly departed on September 22, 2021, leaving behind his wife of 47 years, Deborah Manning Forsythe, and beloved daughter, Jessica Forsythe Martin, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.Doug was born in Columbus, Ohio, on January 9, 1952, to Thomas Moody Forsythe and Betty Miller Forsythe, both of whom preceded him in death. May their heavenly reunion be a glorious one.

Having graduated from Whetstone High School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1970, Doug turned down several scholarships to prestigious schools, choosing to work his way through Bob Jones University to begin his study for the ministry. He served there as a Graduate Assistant, teaching undergrad history while earning both his Master’s and Seminary Degrees.

In 1974, he married Debbie Manning (Anderson, Ind.) who was also studying for Christian Ministry at BJU. Debbie had been greatly influenced by her pastor in Anderson, Dr. Don Camp, and by Youth Pastor, Ron Halbert. God united Debbie and Doug with a singular life purpose of service to the God Who has revealed Himself through the Written Word of the Bible. They led their lives as Servant-Leaders, not self-focused, but giving Glory to God and “thinking of the things of others” (Philippians 2:4).

Doug was a faithful, gentle, and kind husband, loving Debbie “as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for it” (Ephesians 5:25). In 47 years of marriage, he never once raised his voice in anger toward Debbie. Together they walked through many of this life’s troubles clinging to each other, realizing that “in this world you will have trouble, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Through faith in the Word, they believed that “God would never leave them or forsake them” (Hebrews 13:5).

In 1980, they were blessed by the arrival of their first child, Jennifer Christine Forsythe. Two years later, they discovered that she had Cystic Fibrosis, our nation’s leading genetic killer of children. Facing the tremendous time and energy commitment that this devastating disease brought to his family, Doug chose to set aside his own interests and hobbies to totally support Debbie in managing Jennifer’s daily care. He delivered the one-hour, three times per day, grueling process of chest percussion to clear Jenn’s lungs. Because of Doug’s faith, inner strength, servant’s heart, patience, kindness, and commitment, God enabled them to be an exception to the 85 divorce rate of Cystic Fibrosis parents.

Doug’s “peace that passes understanding” (Philippians 4:7) led him and Debbie to take the leap of faith to have a second child, and God blessed them with Jessica Cherie’ who was born without CF. With their family complete, the four of them faced many challenges in this life with the demands of ministry and the episodes of medical crisis. Doug remained the spiritual and physical rock that kept them all grounded. His faith and strength were demonstrated daily to his family and will be forever cherished.

Doug served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, throughout his entire career. He was an astute Bible teacher. He exposited the Word of God through his preaching and teaching in a way that took seasoned believers deeper into spiritual truth, yet was clear and helpful to those who were new to the Word. He spoke extemporaneously and rarely relied on written notes.

He served at Trinity Bible Church (Greer, S.C.) as Senior Pastor; at Indiana Christian Academy (Anderson, Ind.) as high school Bible teacher; at Worthington Christian School (Worthington, Ohio) as single adults’ pastor and christian education director; at Grace Family Church (New Holland, Pa.) as senior pastor; and at Faith Baptist Church (Mt. Vernon, Ohio) as senior pastor.

Our family was devastated at the loss of Jennifer in 2006, but we are now so comforted to know that Doug and Jennifer are reunited together with the Lord. Debbie’s father, J. Ray Manning (Anderson, Ind.) and Jessica and Derrick’s baby, Charlotte, were also there to greet him.

Doug and Debbie had just one opportunity for a son-in-law, and God blessed them with the “gold” of Derrick Spencer Martin (Lancaster, Pa.) in 2011. What a joy and comfort to know he will stand by Jessica in her grief! May their children, Clara Rose (5), Ella Pearl (3), and Spencer Douglas (9 months) be comforted in the loss of their “Pappy” and be influenced spiritually by the Godly heritage he leaves to them.

Doug’s last gift of service to honor the Lord and bless others was to donate his kidneys to save two lives. Both of his recipients are doing well, and their families are thankful and blessed by his departing gift. Debbie was privileged to direct one of his kidneys to his former church receptionist—which is a special blessing.

Doug’s only sibling, Lawrence Forsythe, Retired Major USAF, will miss their times together playing board games and cheering for the OSU football team. His wife, Linda, and their children, Dr. Matthew Forsythe (wife, Gretchen, children Karis and Lucy), Dr. Michelle Forsythe, and Juli Forsythe Piovesan and husband, Dennis, completed our small Forsythe family. We will all cherish our last all-family gathering in July and thank God that He made it possible.

Debbie’s mother, Jean Manning (Anderson, Ind.), and her only sibling, Duane Manning (Graham, N.C.), also enjoyed a wonderful time with Doug and Debbie in Indiana this summer along with Jessica and her family. Those memories will be a blessing as we all comfort one another in Doug’s absence.

Doug’s sudden and unexpected call to his Heavenly reward leaves a terrible hole in the lives of Debbie, Jessica, the rest of the family, many friends, and those who have benefited from his ministry. We are comforted only by the truth of Scripture found in 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18:

“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them who are asleep, that you sorrow not, even, as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also who sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not precede them who are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first; Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

The funeral service may be viewed on Sunday, October 3, at 3:00 p.m. online at the link: www.gracepolaris.org/watch

To those who have inquired about floral arrangements: Both Debbie and Jessica live out of town and will be traveling to Columbus for the funeral. Therefore, they will be unable to take any floral arrangements home with them. If it comforts you to send a floral arrangement, you are welcome to take it home with you after the funeral service. If you wish to minister to the needs of the family, you may give a gift card or monetary donations to the family.

A celebration of life will be held today (Wednesday, September 8) for Annette Renee Miller Coenen, who died Thursday, September 2, 2021, following a long battle with cancer. The service will be live streamed at the church’s Facebook page, facebook.com/WLGBC. Annette was the daughter of long-time Charis Fellowship pastor, Tom and Donna Miller. (Tom was also a long-time employee of the Brethren Missionary Herald Company.) Her obituary appears below.

She was born on February 6, 1968, in Warsaw, Ind., and was the oldest of three daughters born to Thomas (Tom) Richard Miller and Donna Mae (Grady) Miller.

Following her graduation from Warsaw High School in 1986, Annette continued her education at Grace College graduating with a teaching degree in elementary education. After a year of teaching near Atlanta, Georgia, she moved to Colorado where she earned her master’s degree in biblical counseling at Colorado Christian University. She enjoyed a few years of teaching in Colorado before returning to Indiana.

Annette loved Colorado and met many wonderful friends during her years of living there. Those friends are like family to her even to this day.

She always had a heart for helping others and spent many years teaching GED classes at Gateway Education Center in Warsaw. Her delight and greatest joy, however, was working as a teacher at the Miami Correctional Facility, a state prison located near Bunker Hill, Indiana. She loved and desired to help better the lives of the men who were incarcerated there. Many inmates had the privilege of knowing Annette and loving her as she loved them.

She also had a love for God’s creation and spent a lot of time with animals and flowers. Annette’s cats were very special to her, and she particularly enjoyed alpacas. She could often be found caring for her flowers or capturing God’s creation through the lens of her camera.

Annette was a member of and attended Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church with her family. She was dearly loved and was a loving daughter, sister, and friend to many. Most importantly she would like to be remembered for her steadfast faith in Jesus, her Savior.

She is survived by her parents, Tom and Donna Miller (Winona Lake, Ind.); and two sisters, Tami Sue Miller (Appleton, Wisc.), and Amy Lee Miller (Winona Lake, Ind.). She also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and several extended family members.

Visitation was held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, Indiana.
