Steve and Peggy LaClair are the mission coordinators at Grace Community Church, a Grace Brethren church in Hope, N.J. In the spring of 2006, they had the unique idea to use the junk of this world for God’s glory. They asked the people of the local church to collect aluminum cans in order to save the life of a child.

In September of 2006, the first load of cans was redeemed – 2,078 pounds of aluminum, which yielded $1,562.76. Through Compassion International, the congregation adopted their first child, Saula Subara from India.

The abundance of cans continued. In March 2008, the church adopted its second child, Ursian Mohamed Kedir from Ethiopia. A new ministry had been formed as a result of Steve and Peggy’s step of faith — Cans for Christ.

God has blessed the New Jersey congregation, with an average attendance of 65 people, with two wonderful adopted children. The people of Grace Community Church in Hope encourage other congregations to consider using the junk of this world to help save the life of another. — Submitted by Pastor Chet Barofski
