Worthington Christian falls in regional final
PICKERINGTON — A first half in which just about everything went haywire, followed by foul trouble in the second half, combined to end an amazing journey through the girls basketball tournament for Worthington Christian.
The Warriors also ran into an opponent that was determined to reach the Division IV state tournament for the first time after coming up one victory shy three other times.
Waterford got 17 points from guard Dani Drayer and forced Worthington Christian into 18 turnovers in coming away with a 49-37 victory in a regional championship game Saturday night at Pickerington North.
Second-year coach Tammi Evans couldn’t fault the effort of her players. Worthington Christian (21-7) reached the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2004.
“We played hard for 32 minutes,” she said. “There was some pressure being in the regional final game. Our shots weren’t falling, and their shots were falling. You have to continue to respond to the situation rather than react. When we recognized that, we did better.”
The Warriors did not score until 1:18 remained in the first quarter when guard Bridgette Rettstatt drove for a layup to cut the deficit to 7-2.
