Grace Church helping to feed hungry children
BATH — More than 1 million meals will be sent to hungry children around the world thanks to volunteers at Grace Church — Bath.
According to Grace Church Associate Pastor Joe Caruso, 4,353 volunteers gathered in shifts over five days, from May 30 to June 3, to pack 1,034,280 meals, which, he added, is the equivalent of feeding 2,858 children for one year. The effort was part of the church’s contribution to the Feed My Starving Children program.
According to its website, Feed My Starving Children, founded in 1987, is a Christian nonprofit that provides nutritionally complete meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. The organization uses donations to purchase meal ingredients and volunteers to help hand pack the meals, which are distributed through partner agencies to children worldwide. Children benefiting from the program have included those in Haiti, Sudan, Jamaica, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Lesotho, Liberia, Ghana, Guatemala, Malawi, Cambodia, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Cameroon, Niger, Colombia and El Salvador, as well as to Hurricane Katrina victims in Louisiana, Mississippi and other areas.
Caruso said the church first got involved in the Feed My Starving Children program seven years ago by preparing 200,000 meals. He added the program was brought to the church from information gathered at a church conference by a senior pastor.
