Unlocking the mystery
It’s 1804 and Alexander Hamilton has just been mortally wounded in a duel with Aaron Burr.
Tasked with finding Hamilton’s journal and armed with just two lanterns and our wits, three friends and I found ourselves heading into a 19th century study.
Over the next hour, we put our minds to work to solve a series of puzzles that would ultimately lead us to the journal and allow us to escape before time ran out.
What took place was a comedy of successes and missteps, with some clues being solved quickly and others not so much, a measure of head-scratching, a ton of laughter and frequent outbursts of “What the heck?!”
The experience came by way of See Me Escape Rooms at 1830 Cochran St. in Simi Valley.
Residents Ryan Sevy and Jonathan Mihara are the brains behind the new business, which opened in November.
The men drew inspiration for the Hamilton-themed room from their day jobs as educators: Sevy is a special education and film studies teacher at Grace Brethren High School, while Mihara teaches AP world history and AP U.S. history at Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino.
“We were looking at the $10 bill and wondered how much people really knew about the man on it. Plus, we wanted a theme that would be fun and teach people something about history,” Sevy said.
