Grace Brethren wins CIF-SS football championship
When Grace Brethren and Antelope Valley met on Aug. 25, there were seven combined points scored between the two teams. So one couldn’t be blamed for expecting a low-scoring game in their Friday rematch with the CIF Southern Section Division 8 title at stake.
Taking the under was the wrong move, though, as the Lancers beat the Antelopes 63-27 in a high-scoring affair that saw explosive play after explosive play.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Grace Brethren senior Jauqine Vukobradovich said. “This team has worked so hard and wanted it so much.”
Grace Brethren (12-2) eventually prevailed due to making two big unanswered runs to the Antelopes’ one. The Lancers scored the game’s first 21 points, weathered a 20-point Antelope Valley spurt, then ran off 28 consecutive points to put the game out of reach.
Vukobradovich started the second scoring burst with a 70-yard run late in the second quarter and ended a corresponding Antelope Valley drive with an interception, one of two picks for him. But it was a nine seconds early in the third quarter which sealed Grace’s CIF title.
