Camarillo High School Mock Trial team looking forward to state competition
There was a changing of the guard Monday night when the Camarillo Scorpions were named winners of the 2016 Ventura County Mock Trial competition during a ceremony at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.
“This is a good team,” said Camarillo academic coach Shawn Near. “We expect they will do well at the state level. There is a high expectation for Ventura County at the state level and we hope to keep that tradition.”
La Reina High School was unseated from its five-year run as the top team in Ventura County early in the competition.
The top four teams this year were Camarillo High, Grace Brethren High School of Simi Valley in second place, Oak Park Black in third place and St. Bonaventure of Ventura in fourth. …
Grace Brethren School Principal John Hynes was bursting with pride over his school’s performance. “I’m so proud. This is a dream come true,” he said.
Grace Brethren academic coach Kaycie Berthelson said she was amazed by the team’s performance. “They got themselves here. We’ve never been in the finals. They did everything. They put everything together. There are no words about how proud I am,” Berthelson said.
