Oaks Christian, Grace Brethren excited for extended seasons
After 14 games, 12 victories, four playoff wins, a league title and a CIF-Southern Section Division 2 championship, there are brand new challenges ahead for the Oaks Christian School football team.
A long season keeps getting longer. Even head coach Jim Benkert wasn’t sure what his players were thinking as they pondered the prospects.
“We talked about that Saturday,” he said. “What I found was these players are excited just to keep playing. They asked if we could shorten practices, but they’re ready to keep playing. I don’t think they know anything else.
“They love playing football and if they didn’t have that right now, I don’t know how they fill the void.”
The newly crowned CIF-SS Division 2 champions have a chance for two more prestigious laurels before turning in their equipment and calling it a season.
Oaks Christian (12-2) will play host to La Mesa-Helix (12-1) in the CIF-State SoCal Regionals Division 1AA on Friday with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Helix is the CIF-San Diego Section Open Division title winner.
Grace Brethren High faces the identical challenge and opportunity. The Lancers (12-2) won the CIF-SS Division 8 championship last Friday and will play host to San Bernardino-Aquinas (14-0) for the SoCal Regional Division 2A title on Saturday night at Moorpark College beginning at 6.
Victories this weekend would land Grace Brethren and Oaks Christian berths in CIF-State Bowl Games next week at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium.
