Political Science Students Reflect on Interning with Congressman Jim Banks
The Department of History and Political Science continues to place students in internships on both sides of the political aisle. This past summer, two political science students had the unique opportunity to intern in the Fort Wayne office of Congressman Jim Banks (IN-3). Caleb Alexander, recent Grace graduate, and Brennan Murray, current senior, shared their experiences over the summer. Alexander stated, “Everything that went on this summer—from the Jim Banks Job Fair to just answering the phones—proved to be an interesting experience, especially for someone like me who had just graduated college. The people I interacted with on a daily basis taught me how to improve myself and they really did care about our development as professionals and about our interests. The internship really was a fantastic experience.”
For Murray, the internship with Jim Banks’ office led to a paid position. Murray reflected on his experience: “My time spent working at the congressman’s district office put me into direct contact with the best of northeast Indiana: the people and their elected representatives. I was presented opportunities to engage with constituents and to help be a solution to their concerns. In other words, I enjoyed the pleasure of being a public servant. My time in the district office even led to an opportunity to serve as a field representative on the congressman’s re-election campaign.”
