WARSAW, IN – The Kosciusko County (IN) Community Foundation announced the awarding of a Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (H.O.P.E.) grant to Grace in ACTION usa (GiA), Winona Lake for a program that teaches life skills to economically disadvantaged children.
According to Gladys Deloe, founder and president of GiA, the not-for-profit, faith-based organization’s goal is to teach life and job skills to children from economically deprived environments in an effort to prepare them to become productive citizens.
GiA assisted an after-school program in Jackson, Kentucky, which used volunteer teachers to train teen tutors to help younger children develop basic life skills. The Community Foundation grant will enable GiA to publish a LifeTime Learning Curriculum, which is to be tested in pilot programs in after school settings in the greater Warsaw Community.
The LifeTime Learning curriculum is an integral part of GiA’s mission: to educate (life skills) and enable (job skills) employment and/or economic development. The curriculum includes six learning units: Making Choices, Developing Character, Learning to Love, Personal Care, Money Matters, and Personality and Potential. The lessons are offered in three sections: Discoverers, ages 5-8; Achievers, ages 9-12; and Leaders, ages 13-16.
