Marysville Remembers Todd Scoles

A Marysville church family is feeling the loss of one of its leaders. Todd Scoles, associate pastor of the Marysville Grace Brethren Church, died last week while on a bike ride through the countrysideScoles, 48, died of natural causes on Sunday, Oct. 10, as he was riding along Middleburg-Plain City Road near route 161. While the Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated the scene for evidence of foul play, county coroner Dr. David Applegate said that an autopsy indicated that Scoles received no injuries from a bike crash that would have caused his death.

In his time serving in Marysville, Scoles touched many lives, according to a statement released by Grace Brethren Church.

“We here at Marysville Grace have been privileged to labor with Todd for the last three years,” the letter states. “He has provided leadership, consistency, organization and straightforward, biblical teaching to the church as a whole, but it is his impact on individual lives that will never be forgotten.”

Scoles used his ability to connect with others to spread the gospel, according to the church.

“He had a way of meeting people where they were and setting them at ease, so that he could speak God’s truth into their lives in a very practical way,” the letter states. “His smile and encouragement were always readily available. In three short years, he has endeared himself and his family to our church in an amazing way. He will be greatly missed.”

At Marysville Grace, Scoles provided oversight for children’s ministries, youth ministries, men’s and women’s ministries, small groups and other projects. Before serving in Marysville, he worked with the Northwest Chapel Grace Brethren Church (GBC), the Ashland GBC, and the GBC of Columbus. Scoles earned an English degree from Ohio State University, before earning degrees from Grace Theological Seminary and Ashland Theological Seminary.

In addition to his work with the church, Scoles was also a writer. “Restoring the Household,” his book, published in 2009, is an examination of the history of the Grace Brethren church movement, along with its ordinances.

Friends and family gathered to celebrate Scoles’ life yesterday at Grace Brethren Church of Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Linda, and their children, Lydia, Rachel and Philip, along with other extended family.
