Pottstown churches provide shelter from the cold

Volunteers help move items for the traveling homeless shelter in Pottstown, Pa.

It’s a place where everyone knows your name, but the location changes every month.

Ministries at Main Street Homeless Shelter provides a 20-bed shelter from November to April at a different church in Pottstown every month.

In February, the shelter is at St. John’s United Church of Christ, High and Price streets.

“We are like a little family,” said the Rev. Kork Moyer, of Still Waters Grace Brethren Church, 256 S. Hanover St., who runs the shelter program. “It’s like a traveling group.

“The homeless community is just like any other community. They have all the same problems. They have drug addiction, alcoholism and financial issues. Everyone knows your business.”

The ministry provides a meal every night at 9, followed by lodging and a 7:30 a.m. breakfast.
