An article in today’s Newark, Ohio, Advocate, tells about a Grace Brethren pastor’s daughter who is not afraid to confront problems. PATASKALA – Watkins Memorial senior Caroline Saldivar is not the kind of person who sees a problem in front of her and quickly turns away from it.
Instead, Saldivar confronts the problem head on and attempts to find a viable solution to it.
She has been doing that in recent years at her high school.
At the end of the 2014-15 school year, Saldivar coordinated a mock crash in Watkins Memorial’s parking lot, enlisting West Licking Joint Fire District firefighters and Licking County Sheriff’s Office deputies, among others, to drive home the dangers of distracted driving and drinking and driving prior to the school’s prom.
Saldivar organized the crash as part of a Youth Leadership Council of Licking County project. She is a member of the YLC, a group that promotes alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention around area high schools, among other work.
More recently, Saldivar has been serving on Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine’s Teen Ambassador Board.
Saldivar had to apply to join the board, which seeks to advise DeWine’s office on issues facing teens — and develop solutions to those issues.
Not surprisingly, her father, Mike Saldivar, a pastor at Pataskala Grace Brethren Church, is proud of her.
“She takes on responsibility and doesn’t wait for things to happen,” he said. “As a dad, that makes me very proud.”
Part of the elder Saldivar’s pride stems from the fact his only daughter has not been a longtime student at Watkins Memorial.
