Yoora Kim got a jump-start on what most high schoolers fantasize about.
As a senior at Grace Brethren High School in Simi Valley, Kim lived alone after her parents returned to their native South Korea.
On Friday night, the 19-year-old graduated, with her parents in attendance.
“It was great to receive an (excellent) education,” Kim said. “(In Korea) there was discrimination against me. But here I had equal opportunity.”
Several hundred family members and friends filled Grace Brethren Church to see the 48 seniors receive their diplomas.
Every senior from Grace Brethren’s 16th graduating class will be going on to some form of additional education. The majority will be attending universities throughout the country. A few will be at vocational-technical schools for specific training.
What strikes Principal John Hynes the most about this year’s class is how diverse the schools are that they have chosen.
“There are a lot of students leaving the state,” Hynes said. “That’s not typical for us as a small Christian school because a lot of the kids like to stay close to family.”
Hynes also said he has many students who are focused with large goals ahead of them. The partial list of majors read at Friday’s ceremony included pre-med, psychology, politics, interior design, mechanical engineering, nursing and journalism.
