Simi teen’s not horsing around
Rodeo competitions and beauty queen contests seem like polar opposites, but for local teen Macy Obringer, the two go hand-in-hand.
Macy, a 16-year-old sophomore at Grace Brethren High School, has been riding horses since before she could walk.
The Simi Valley teenager’s connection with the rodeo world comes from her mother, Amy Obringer, an accomplished cowgirl who competed in team penning, cattle sorting and barrel racing before Macy was born.
Macy began participating in rodeos herself at the age of 15, taking part in barrel racing and pole bending events. She recently added goat tying and breakaway roping to her skill set.
“(I do) rodeo to preserve the Western heritage and lifestyle,” Macy said. “(My) favorite part is the atmosphere and the relationships you build with people and horses.”
