Six-Day Wifflefest in Ashland At Bat

Jul 1, 2011

This is the 12th year for the Ashland, Ohio, Wifflefest, which is hosted by the Southview Grace Brethren Church. This year, a record number of teams have signed up for the event, which started on Wednesday (following a Sunday dedication service) and concludes Monday with a community hog roast, awards recognition ceremony, concert by Jordan Biel, and the Ashland City fireworks show.

A story about the event appeared in the June 30, 2011, Ashland (Ohio) Times-Gazette. A portion of the story appears below.

Liftoff at Southview: Tournament already setting records

A few hot air balloons took off Thursday from Freer Field, soaring into the sky and into the background of a Junior High Tournament game during Wifflefest at Southview Grace Brethren Church.

Somehow, after what now is 12 years, the annual Ashland wiffleball event continues to take off just the same.

A tournament-record 18 teams signed up for the Junior High Tournament — the last of them rushing onto the church grounds appearing like they had just robbed a bank for the chance at Wifflefest glory.

“We were doing opening ceremonies and this walk-up team comes running in with bags of change,” said Elaine Hess, one of the tournament’s biggest helpers in registration and scheduling. “To me, that was funny — bags of change to get here, (down to) the wire. … So we started ripping up schedules and printing new ones.”
