Officers honored for saving 11-year-old boy who fell through ice
Three police officers are being hailed as heroes for saving a young boy who fell through thin ice on a retention pond.
The body camera video shows the moment police officer David Swain and off-duty state Trooper Jacob Bill entered the icy waters of a retention pond in Winona Lake. “He’s hanging on the edge of the ice,” a woman can be heard in the video saying.
Hanging on for dear life was an 11-year-old boy.
“I knew that if he went under for whatever reason we probably weren’t going to be able to find him so I knew we had to get out there quick,” Swain said.
What officer Swain didn’t know was that state trooper Jacob Bill was driving by and saw the commotion so he went down to help.
“He was starting to get his stuff out he was getting ready to get in and I was just like well I’m not wearing the battle rattle so I ended up jumping in,” Bill said.
